Cabinet of Curiosities was an installation created in 2012 as an evocation of the scientific empiricism and fantasy of the 16th and 17th centuries. Its particular subject is the wunderkammen, private one-room museums where oddities from distant parts of the world were collected and displayed. I have been a lifelong collector of ephemera — the cast-off and forgotten, as well as the strange and curious — in an attempt to make sense of the world, and this piece gave me the opportunity to create a unified piece out of these disparate items. The display showed found, collected, and artist-constructed objects; anatomical and botanical prints; nests, fossils, and bones; book pages and artifacts; biological specimens and totems; and a collection of my related paintings and works on paper.
