NATURE STUDIES

Statement

The surface textures of the paintings were inspired by the faded colors and partially visible images of old painted walls in the cathedrals and chateaux of France. The paintings are rendered as panels that can be hung singly, side by side, or attached as a screen. In creating this series, I have been influenced by the Nabis and the French Symbolist painter, Odilon Redon, both in their connection with Japanese decorative art and screen painting, and in their evocation of a primordial, mysterious natural world.
