I work in collaboration with the forces of nature, creating cyanotypes with outdoor sunlight and often using plants and other elements from nearby surroundings in the exposure. As I work outdoors with materials that are responsive to the elements, I feel a deep engagement with localized ecosystems. This engagement is furthered by working with paper and canvas at the edges of oceans, rivers, and other bodies of water in an attempt to capture their ebb and flow at that particular time and place. My observation of these natural phenomena has made me increasingly aware of the delicate interconnections in the world around us, and the changes in our ecosystem that require both humans and animals to adapt to new ways of navigating the world.

My recent focus is on sea kelp ecosystems, and I use kelp from California beaches to create small- and large-scale pieces. In these works, I seek to capture the power and mystery of the ocean as well as the beauty and fragility of kelp forests.
